ASUS GRYPHON Z87 DDR3 1600 LGA 1150 Motherboard

ASUS GRYPHON Z87 DDR3 1600 LGA 1150 Motherboard - I Pick This One

Beautiful motherboard; the best mATX available
This is a terrific choice for a stock or slightly overclocked Haswell build. Asus meets and probably exceeds the competition in the quality of all the components used, in the robustness of the design, and in all standard features (number of USB3 ports; number and capacity of PCIe connectors etc). Then Asus simply knocks it out of the park when it comes to thermal management. Two custom ICs, an entire section of the BIOS, and a Windows app are dedicated to helping with this. And this is without the thermal armor which is also offered for the board. In these areas Asus has no competition.

My own build went perfectly, with no problems of any kind. As described in the manual, the first two RAM sticks should go in slots A2 and B2. I was amazed to find that idle power draw of the entire PC dropped by almost 90W from the 2006 motherboard & CPU this replaced. How do I review a motherboard as an end user?
By giving you my impressions as an end user. I have no test bench and no equipment or software for benchmarks, just some seriously expensive CPU, GPU and RAM hogging software. My last PC lasted an eternity - nearly 6 years. This is from someone who's not gone 2 years without a new PC for nearly 30 years. I went through Macs nearly annually for a while. As you're aware, improvements are getting more and more incremental. My last build was a first generation Intel Core 2 Quad on a Gigabyte with a P35 Northbridge and 8GB RAM. GPU's come and go. It's still no slouch. But with the Adobe CS6 Suite and Lightroom (5 now) I certainly was having problems running several programs at once which is frequently.

I've always done ATX as my form factor before. But cases seem to be getting huge - and coming from Lian Li everything is at least 2 inches taller. I'd always wanted something small(ish), so I started researching mATX. I was...
